Douglas Lake

Douglas Lake is East Tennessee’s premier water recreation destination, offering over 550 miles of scenic shoreline nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Located just minutes from Dandridge and Talbott, this 30,400-acre reservoir attracts more than 1.7 million visitors annually with its crystal-clear waters, world-class fishing, and breathtaking mountain views.

Built in 1943 during World War II in a record-breaking 12 months and 17 days, Douglas Lake was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide hydroelectric power. Today, it’s transformed into one of Tennessee’s most beloved outdoor recreation areas, perfect for families, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts alike.

Douglas Lake consistently ranks among the nation’s top fishing destinations, particularly for crappie and largemouth bass. The lake has earned spots in the top 5 for crappie fishing and top 10 for largemouth bass fishing in the United States. Anglers can also reel in white bass, striped bass, spotted bass, bluegill, walleye, and catfish. With over 80% of the shoreline remaining undeveloped, you’ll find countless quiet coves and fishing spots away from the crowds.

Boating is hugely popular on Douglas Lake, with plenty of marinas offering pontoon, tritoon, jet ski, and WaveRunner rentals by the hour, day, or week. The lake reaches depths of 140 feet and provides ample space for water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and leisurely cruises. Multiple public boat launches provide year-round access, with some offering free launching for campers and guests.

Swimming and water activities are welcome throughout the lake’s expansive waters. You’ll discover sandy beaches tucked into secluded coves and islands, perfect for family picnics and swimming. The beach area near Douglas Dam features a large concrete boat launch and designated swimming zones. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are excellent ways to explore the lake’s calmer areas and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Our Gatlinburg area vacation rentals provide the perfect home base for exploring Douglas Lake. Our Destination Dandridge property is located just minutes from the lake’s best boat launches, marinas, and fishing spots. Wake up to stunning lake views, spend your days on the water, and return each evening to the comfort and privacy of your own lakeside retreat. Whether you’re planning a fishing trip, family vacation, or romantic getaway, Douglas Lake offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and peaceful relaxation.
