About The Menil Collection
Discover The Menil Collection, a world-class art museum offering free admission in Houston’s historic Montrose neighborhood. Founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, this exceptional cultural destination houses over 17,000 works of art spanning from antiquity to contemporary times. Set within a tranquil 30-acre residential campus, the Menil Collection invites visitors to explore multiple art buildings and green spaces designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.
The Collection
The Menil Collection showcases an impressive array of artworks representing diverse cultures and time periods. Explore pieces from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations, alongside significant holdings of African, Oceanic, and Native American art. The museum’s modern and contemporary collection features masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, and Robert Rauschenberg. The Menil is particularly renowned for its extensive Surrealist collection and galleries dedicated to Byzantine and Medieval art.
Art Buildings on Campus
The 30-acre Menil campus consists of five distinctive art buildings. The main museum building, designed by Renzo Piano, features innovative natural lighting through distinctive “leaf” roofs. Additional buildings include the Menil Drawing Institute, the Cy Twombly Gallery, Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall, and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel. Each building offers unique exhibitions and intimate viewing experiences within the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Hours and Admission
The Menil Collection is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as major holidays. Admission is always free for all visitors, making world-class art accessible to everyone. The museum welcomes guests to explore all buildings and green spaces at no charge, though donations are appreciated to support the museum’s mission.
